Bombers welcome commitment to 17th team

Confirmation the Australian Rugby League Commission remain committed to a 17th National Rugby League (NRL) team in Queensland has been welcomed by the Brisbane Bombers bid team.

Brisbane Bombers NRL Bid Director Nick Livermore said while the Australian Rugby League Commission’s primary focus was on the safe resumption of the NRL season as the COVID-19 curve flattens, the Commission Chairman Peter V’Landys has restated the commitment to NRL expansion.

“Before COVID-19, all the signals were that the 17th team will be from Brisbane. Mr V’Landys has confirmed that remains the case,” Mr Livermore said.

“When the ARL is in a position to start the process to expand the NRL, the Brisbane Bombers will be ready.”

“A Brisbane Bombers NRL team would play their games at Suncorp Stadium, arguably the best venue for rugby league.”

“For those league fans whose allegiance is with an NRL team south of the border, a Brisbane Bombers team in the NRL competition will give them more opportunities to see their team in action at Suncorp. Over time the Brisbane Bombers might become their team.”

“The Brisbane Bombers will deliver more local derbies with the three Queensland NRL teams – against the Broncos at Suncorp, against the Titans at Cbus Super Stadium and against the Cowboys at the new Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.”
